Reuters could not immediately confirm the Washington Post report.

"He went out, stood shoulder to shoulder and sent a message to the whole world that we stand with our allies", Miller said in an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation," referencing the president's brief statement Saturday standing beside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Today, an administration official tells NPR and other news outlets that Pence had based his response on conversations he had with Flynn as he prepared to appear on the show. Vice President Mike Pence and Press Secretary Sean Spicer repeated Flynn's claims to the American people.

During the calls, which were monitored by intelligence officials, Flynn supposedly made it clear that USA relations with Russian Federation under Trump would change drastically, and he also discussed the two countries working together to fight ISIS.

National security adviser Michael Flynn privately discussed USA sanctions against Russian Federation with that country's ambassador to the United States during the month before President Trump took office, contrary to public assertions by Trump officials, current and former US officials said. According to current and former USA intelligence and law enforcement officials, Flynn and Sergey Kislyak, the ambassador, exchanged texts and at least five phone calls in the moments before and the day after Obama announced his actions on Russian Federation, which were in retaliation for its election hacking.

Flynn can not rule out that he spoke to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak about sanctions, an aide close to the National Security Adviser said Friday.

On Nov. 10, just two days after the USA election, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said "there were contacts" between the Russian government and Trump's campaign team before the US presidential election.

The FBI is now investigating Flynn's communication with Kislyak.

Senior policy adviser Stephen Miller said the three-week-old Trump administration is "pursuing every single possible action to keep our country safe from terrorism".

"You and Steve Bannon were reportedly the prime movers behind the rollout of this executive order before it had been fully vetted", Fox News' Chris Wallace asked Miller.

"In any case, the Administration's sloppy handling of such a serious issue creates a threat smack in the middle of our national security apparatus", Engel charged.

Previously, Flynn swore to the press a few times that he had never discussed sanctions with Russian officials.

"President Trump and I myself completely share the view that we are going to promote further cooperation between the two nations". Last week, however, his spokesman said he "couldn't be certain" that the topic never came up.

"It's clear that concerns about General Flynn's ties to Russian Federation were well warranted", Engel said.

Even as the Trump administration maintains publicly that it will keep in place sanctions on Russian Federation over its incursion into Ukraine, White House officials, including Flynn, are offering less committal signals behind closed doors, according to these sources.

Therefore, Schindler says, US spies know what was discussed and this one reason why the intelligence community doesn't trust Trump or his cabinet. We just don't know. "I always knew [Putin] was very smart".
