That pipeline is part of the very controversial Dakota Access Pipeline, which runs through some ancient Native American sites in North Dakota.

Gov Burgum claimed he was issuing the order because of unseasonably warm temperatures that were accelerating the melt of heavy snowpack across the state. Gov. Doug Burgum said that the amount of waste, coupled with the ending of winter and a potential spring flood, could lead to an environmental disaster concerning contamination of drinking water. They think the thousands of pounds of trash could pollute the Missouri River, among other waterways - officials are not concerned about how to pay for the cleanup.

State officials say it isn't going fast enough. The governor said he was lining up additional contractors as early as Thursday. Garbage ranges from trash to building debris to human waste, according to Morton County Emergency Manager Tom Doering.

Sanitation crews have been working around-the-clock to clean up the debris from the DAPL construction site. Cultural surveys conducted past year by the Army Corps of Engineers, however, show the pipeline avoided tribal lands.

Hundreds of protestors flocked to Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota to protest the pipeline's construction, which activists say will desecrate their sacred burial grounds and would contaminate their drinking water along the 1,172-mile route.

The tribe ordered occupiers to leave the area after the Obama administration rejected the almost 2,000-mile long pipeline in December.

In the Wednesday news release, Enbridge's Guy Jarvis, president, of liquids pipelines and major projects, said the Dakota Access pipeline "is being built and operated with what we believe are best-in-class pipeline safety measures". Just last week, President Trump reversed course and approved the final permit for the pipeline to proceed.
