A 7-month-old girl and a 2-year-old girl were both found dead and four other people were injured, including another child and a firefighter, after a house fire Saturday night in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood, fire officials said.

The fire started in the basement of a two-story building in the 6600 block of S. Champlain in West Woodlawn around 10:30 Saturday night.

Firefighters pulled a 6-year-old boy from the basement and he was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Deputy District Chief Michael Carbone told reporters at the scene.

Two women were able to make it out of the basement on their own. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized. He is expected to be okay. "My sister goes to school with a girl that lives down in there and I know there's kids in the house or whatever so by the time I got to the corner, two of the guys had already ran in there said the flames were so thick, there was nothing they could do to go back and get the kids", said neighbor Taneisha Grayson.

The Chicago Police Department's Arson Unit is investigating the blaze, and early findings indicate the cause of the fire probably was accidental, according to the report.
