James Comey: FBI Investigating Trump Campaign Contacts With Russia

"The FBI and Department of Justice have no information to support those tweets", Comey said.

WASHINGTON ― The FBI director confirmed the existence of an investigation into possible ties between associates of President Donald Trump and Russian government officials.

On Monday morning, hours before the House intelligence committee convened a hearing on Russian hacking during the 2016 campaign with star witness Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey, the president of the United States was tweeting furiously in an effort to preempt headlines that might emerge from the event.

Mr. Comey refused to say whether someone did try to get a FISA warrant to surveil Trump Tower.

Mr Schiff said: "There was circumstantial evidence of collusion; there is direct evidence, I think, of deception".

Earlier, the chairman of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Republican Representative Devin Nunes, told the same hearing that the panel had seen no evidence of collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 campaign. "However, it's still possible that other surveillance activities were used against President Trump and his associates". Trump called the notion that he had colluded with Russia "FAKE NEWS" and said allegations about his connections to Russia had been concocted by Democrats "as an excuse for running a bad campaign".

Even before Comey took the witness stand at Monday's hearing, Trump unleashed a string of tweets seeking control the narrative. "This is, of course, no crime", Schiff said.

"As with any counterintelligence investigation, this will also include an assessment of whether any crimes were committed", he said.

Russian Federation denies attempting to influence the election. "Is it possible that all of these events and reports are completely unrelated, and nothing more than an entirely unhappy coincidence?"

"The stakes are nothing lesss than the future of liberal democracy, " Schiff said.

Schiff said that the ongoing effort determing the scope of Russian interference in the US election system represented the most important challenge for USA intelligence. One noted, "We've heard this was a possibility but we didn't know for sure".

The hearing's featured witnesses included Comey and Adm. Michael S. Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency. The NSA also said that it has no evidence to support those claims. With gritted teeth, he said that would violate the agreement between the so-called "Five Eyes" intelligence agencies - the USA, U.K., Canada, Australia and New Zealand - not to spy on each other's citizens.

Nunes also told Fox News on Sunday that there was no evidence Trump was wiretapped.

Sen. Bob Casey, the Pennsylvania Democrat, posted that this tweet from Trump proved that "every attempt from @POTUS to distract from legitimate Russian Federation [questions] makes the need for independent commission/special counsel all the more clear". "This story is FAKE NEWS and everyone knows it!" he said in a series of morning tweets.

One of the first orders of business for Democrats will probably be to press Mr. Comey to put to rest the claim, peddled by Mr. Trump, that his predecessor wiretapped his campaign offices. "Big advantage in Electoral College & lost!" he added.

During the hearing, Comey also shot down Trump claims that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower in New York City during the presidential campaign.

"Is there an exception in the law for reporters who want to break a story?"
