Leicester have announced the Welford Road return of Australian Matt O'Connor as their head coach.

Former All Black Aaron Mauger will coach English Premiership club Leicester for one more game before an unceremonious exit.

The Tigers remain in the fight for places in the Premiership semi-finals this season and have just won the Anglo-Welsh Cup with Mauger in interim charge of team affairs.

Leicester chairman Peter Tom said: 'The club have conducted an exhaustive search to find who we feel is the right person to take the team forward.

The 46-year-old will now be returning to the Premiership, as the incumbent Leicester coach Aaron Mauger prepares to leave after this Saturday's match against Northampton Saints, Cockerill having been sacked in January.

O'Connor, capped once by Australia, guided Leicester to the title in 2013 as head coach under director of rugby Richard Cockerill, having previously worked as both a backline and attack coach for the Tigers.

'Matt has that experience as head coach during a successful period which brought three league titles, an Anglo-Welsh Cup and the club's most recent appearance in the European Cup final.

Since leaving Welford Road in 2013, O'Connor has worked with Leinster, who he led them to the Celtic League title in his first season, Queensland Reds and Tonga.

The former All Black centre played for Leicester after leaving New Zealand in 2007.

And reflecting on O'Connor's appointment, Leicester club captain Tom Youngs said: 'Matt has a good record in the Premiership and had a lot of success in his previous spell here.

The Tigers only just won the Anglo-Welsh Cup final yesterday, beating the Exeter Chiefs 16-12 at the Twickenham Stoop in London, while they remain very much in title contention in the Aviva Premiership, now sitting in fifth place on 47 points, one point behind fourth-placed Bath with five games remaining in the regular season.
