Bill Gates again tops Forbes rich list; Trump slips 220 spots

More than a few these fabulously rich folks have local ties, including Medford native and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose $47.5 billion in the bank is good enough for 10th on the list. Last year's list had 1,810 billionaires.

The global population of billionaires jumped 13 percent from the previous year to a record 2,043, the biggest annual rise since the magazine began compiling the list 31 years ago. The creative engine behind the Windows operating system is the richest person in the world for the fourth consecutive year, and Gates has occupied the top spot 18 times since 1994.

Gates, the philanthropic co-founder of Microsoft Corp, was followed this year by Berkshire Hathaway Inc Chairman Warren Buffett at No. 2 and Amazon.com Inc founder Jeff Bezos at No. 3.

Forbes notes that Trump is the first billionaire president in US history and said " the business that made him rich remains intact".

While Donald Trump's political fortunes were rising, his net worth was dropping to a mere $3.5-billion, or roughly a third of what he claimed during his successful campaign for the USA presidency, according to the latest Forbes list of the world's billionaires.

The number of billionaires across the world topped 2,000 for the first time ever, with the Asia-Pacific region home to more than anywhere else, 720 to be precise, according to Forbes' annual rich list.

David Thomson and family, whose estimated fortune of $27.2 billion United States put them at 24th position.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg comes in at fifth on the list with an estimated net worth of $56 billion.

This year's list was missing one notable Hoosier. His wealth jumped to $72.8-billion, a gain of $27.6-billion from a year ago, Forbes said.

The US had the most billionaires with 565, while China was second with 319, and Germany was in the third spot with 114.
