Eight rescued off Sligo coast after dive boat capsizes

Eight people have been safely rescued after a boat overturned in the Atlantic off the coast of Sligo.

One person was winched by the Rescue 118 Coastguard helicopter, which was called off from the ongoing search for Rescue 116, and the diver was flown to Sligo University Hospital.

He is understood to have been treated for a suspected cardiac problem.

The dive boat got caught in a heavy swell off the coast of Sligo as they were about to go diving.

Two of the men were taken to hospital following the incident which occured off Aughris Pier, east of Sligo town.

Ambulances were on standby and one other diver was brought to hospital by ambulance but it is not thought that their injuries are life-threatening.

The Sligo Bay RNLI lifeboat was called out and managed to rescue seven members of the boat.

Rescue 118 was called off from the search at Blacksod Bay, Co Mayo for the missing crew members of Rescue 116, the Sikorsky helicopter which crashed into the sea on Tuesday morning.

The other six people did not require further assistance.

Weather conditions were described as brisk, but visibility was excellent.
