Hundreds supported the Earth Hour campaign at the switch-off event held at the SM by the Bay, Mall of Asia Complex.

"Lastly, we would like to encourage people to take action beyond the one hour and to make energy efficiency and environmental conservation part of their daily lifestyles".

It's not about conserving electricity but sending out a collective message.

Delhi participates in this movement and tonight monuments like India Gate, Red Fort, Lotus Temple, Akshardham Temple and Rashtrapati Bhawan will have their lights out for an hour!

Jenni Newman, from the organisation, said it was originally started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and since then has grown to include thousands of cities and towns worldwide.

Egypt has announced that it will take part in "Earth Hour" and turn off lights in archaeological and touristic sites on Saturday from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

"Building a sustainable tomorrow depends today on everyone", said the United Nations chief, asking the world to join him in turning off their lights today at 8:30 p.m. local time. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Big Ben Clock Tower in London, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro and the Empire State Building in NY are among the monuments whose operators have agreed to participate in the demonstration.

Pakistan will join 170 countries on Saturday to observe the 10th Earth Hour by switching off unnecessary lights in a pledge to save the planet. While the world turned out the lights yesterday, were you one of them?

Electrical utility companies across Canada have also gotten involved in Earth Hour in years past, tweeting out the usage numbers during the hour.
