The Patriots quarterback's Super Bowl jersey from two years prior, against the Seahawks, and Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller's helmet from the 2016 Super Bowl were also found along with the most recent Brady jersey.

The NFL issued a statement saying the "items were found in the possession of a credentialed member of the worldwide media".

"If it turns out to be true, (La Prensa) strongly rejects the conduct of Martin Ortega. who took advantage of the position he had to use the La Prensa newspaper to get accreditation and gain access to the field", it said in a statement.

But combine cameras, misrepresentation, cops, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, worldwide intrigue and, well, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, and you have a story for the ages.

According to Jay Glazer, an insider analyst for the NFL, the case is connected with other robberies of the same type and with a flaw in league safety protocols for at least the last three years.

"We were able to work with the FBI, Mexican authorities, to respond to the suspect's last known location", Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said. In addition to Brady's Super Bowl LI jersey, police allegedly recovered Brady's Super Bowl XLIX jersey and Von Miller's helmet from Super Bowl L, according to USA Today.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation helped with the recovery, the National Football League and police said.

La Prensa officials said they accepted the resignation of the newspaper's director, Martín Mauricio Ortega Camberos, a week ago, but only just connected his resignation to the investigation after police revealed new details.

Ortega has been identified as a former executive at the Mexican outlet La Prensa, which issued a public apology for the actions of their employee. His Super Bowl XLIX jersey was also missing, inexplicably, but it has also been recovered.

He was then seen walking out of the locker room with something discreetly under his arm, believed to be Brady's jersey.

"It's unfortunate, because that's a nice piece of memorabilia", he told reporters at the time. I know they worked very hard on this case - and it is very much appreciated.

After Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005, Ortaga grabbed a selfie with Brady.

The morning after the game, Brady told the media: "The jersey, I put it in my bag and I came out and it wasn't there anymore".
