Steve Bannon Throws His Worst Insult at Jared Kushner

Allies of Bannon's inside and outside the White House derisively refer to Kushner, National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn and deputy national security adviser Dina Powell and others as the "liberal Democrat" wing of Trump's White House.

When asked on "Fox News Sunday" why he pushed for Bannon's removal, McMaster said "this is not as significant as it appears, I think".

Publicly, White House staff deny that the rumors of a major overhaul amount to anything more than that - rumors.

Bannon, who joined Trump's presidential campaign after serving as chairman of Breitbart, was one of the forces behind the president's nationalist policies, including his denunciations of some USA military interventions.

Stephen Bannon, (R) Senior Advisor to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Jared Kushner (L) walk from Trump's plane upon their arrival in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S., December 1, 2016. And while officials declined to detail the specific recommendations of Trump's top aides, the strikes that the President ordered reflected a break from the nationalist stance he adopted as a candidate that was driven, in large part, by Bannon's advice.

Even as Trump apparently sought to cool the infighting, he is said to have floated potential replacements for Priebus, who has reportedly been on thin ice since January, due to the administration's early missteps. And it all came to a head this week, when new details emerged that Kushner had played a pivotal role in kicking Bannon off the National Security Council. With Flynn out of the picture, they said, there was no need for Bannon to remain on the council. The House GOP health care bill failed spectacularly on its first attempt, and he is still dogged by questions about Russian connections.

Top White House aides Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner have met and agreed to "bury the hatchet" over their differences, a senior administration official says, in a bid to stop infighting that has distracted from President Donald Trump's message.

Kushner, who has no foreign policy or military experience, has been tasked with several important issues for the Trump administration such as Middle East peace and liaison to both China and Mexico.

Kushner and other aides anxious that Bannon's fixation on "deconstructing" government had not served Trump well in the first months of his presidency.

But this past week, one that some of his aides considered the best of his presidency, was marred by fits, starts and self-inflicted wounds - and the constant churn of news accounts of a White House at war with itself finally wore the president out.

But it's clear his position in the White House is in jeopardy. The odds are that both Bannon and Priebus are on their way out.

"No staff shakeups here", the official added.
