Snell pitched the Rays to a 13-7 win against the Red Sox in his first start against them last June 27, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 frames. Materia rescued Sdoia after the explosions and the couple are now engaged to be married.

"He's put together a number of quality at-bats of late particularly", Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Moreland.

Another Boston Red Sox player injured himself on the basepaths Sunday.

"That's how you like it, man", he said.

"The group of guys in here make it easy", said Moreland, who spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Texas Rangers before joining the Red Sox on a one-year pact. Mookie Betts and Christian Vazquez each had three hits. The Rays have also struck out at least 11 times in five of those six games.

The team announced he was bothered by a left hamstring cramp. The Rays used four relievers. "They were asked to do some things that we normally wouldn't ask of them".

Red Sox: LHP Chris Sale (0-1, 1.23) looks for his first win with Boston despite two solid starts.

But they got just enough on Saturday.

Sandy Leon's broken-bat, bases-loaded ground out pushed across the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning. The count went to 2-0 to Evan Longoria, but Barnes got him to hit into a double play. But that merely meant that, after an instant walk to Mitch Moreland to try to set up a double play, Bogaerts could single home Ramirez (who had advanced on the earlier throw) for the eventual game-winner.

Last season, Ramirez turned in one of his best offensive seasons in recent memory as he generated a.281/.361/.506 slash line and parlayed it with 30 home runs, which marked his highest total since 2008, the same season he made his first ever All-Star appearance. He also failed to go at five innings for the first time in 43 starts dating back to 8/26/15.

Since the start of the 2013 season Rays' pitchers have allowed the most grand slams in the American League (21) and second most in baseball. Other than a hiccup in the third inning, when the lefty gave up a run, two hits and two walks, the Rays didn't have a prayer.

Prior to the game, the Rays moved Mallex Smith to the 10-day disabled list, moved Brad Boxberger from the 10-day DL to the 60-day, and purchased the contract of Shane Peterson. "I'm always pretty cautious no matter where we're at, trying to stay sanitary". He said he hopes to face hitters next week "depending how I feel tomorrow".

"I think it comes back to not getting any strikeouts", he said of his outing.

There was a moment of reflection before the game, marking the fourth anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Red Sox: They open a four-game series Friday against Tampa Bay with reigning AL Cy Young Award victor Rick Porcello (1-0, 4.38) facing Rays RHP Chris Archer (1-0, 2.45).
