Tech Giant Receives Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit From California DMV

The company has kept mum about their plans regarding their movement toward the automotive industry, but has kept a trail of breadcrumbs for people to follow. The Cupertino firm has always been rumored to be working on a secret "Project Titan" linked to vehicles, but it never confirmed that.

Long suspected of working on a self-driving vehicle project, Apple has never openly and directly discussed its interest in cars.

Uber states it did not steal Google self-driving tech The details are limited, however Apple has been given permission to test three cars manufactured by Lexus, according to the BBC. Other more traditional automakers such as Honda, Ford and Mercedes Benz are listed as well. Apple registered six drivers that monitor these cars.

The company has been highly secretive about its autonomous driving program, called Project Titan, and is not commenting on the new permit.

The big question remaining is whether Apple is working on hardware for autonomous vehicles or just software, according to Munster. Instead, the tech-giant referred to a previous statement from the December 2016 letter.

The tests will be conducted using existing vehicles. Most other companies holding the testing permit are technology startups.

We should discover more about it, as the permit needs public reporting of crashes involving the test vehicles and how frequently they need human intervention.

Uber recently made a decision to temporally "put the breaks", so to speak, on testing driverless cars due to a crash in Arizona, according to Bloomberg Technology.

If writing a letter to the NHTSA isn't a clear enough sign of the company's intent, then perhaps this latest development of having their name listed as the 30 company to test autonomous vehicles in the sunny state should be enough proof.
