Chaffetz, 50, was elected to the House in 2008. If Chaffetz no longer has a political opponent in the White House, maybe he sees no point in remaining on the Oversight Committee. Chaffetz, a Republican who chairs the House Oversight Committee, s.

Washington - and all the politicians who occupy it - are viewed with suspicion (and that's being nice) by the Republican base.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, shown here at a hearing on IT modernization, said he won't run for reelection in 2018.

"My future plans are not yet finalized but I haven't ruled out the possibility of leaving early", Chaffetz told CNN in a text message.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday on a grassroots crowdfunding effort by Kathryn Allen for the 2018 Democratic nomination in UT-03 that was fueled by Chaffetz' dismissal of health-care costs last month.

Jason Chaffetz will not be running for office again in 2018.

Democrats saw the Chaffetz decision more in the prism of a political pendulum that is swinging back against President Trump, and the GOP.

In the four presidential elections between 2000 and 2012, Republican candidates won the district by more than 65 percent of the vote. "The signal from the election in Kansas and the election in Georgia last night is that seats that once were nearly sure Republican seats are now up for grabs and really contested, even in Utah". Gaffetz announced Sunday that he will be running to be John Boehner successor as House speaker. Chaffetz proudly refused to use campaign funds to feed state delegates, as is traditional in the process of currying favor. His decision to make the Wednesday announcement, he says, was to give prospective candidates in Utah "time to lay the groundwork for a successful run".

Hughes and Wright didn't return messages. Donald Trump won the district by 24 points but only got 47% of the vote, in part because Evan McMullin ran an independent campaign focused nearly entirely on Utah. The crowdfunding site CrowdPac has already raised over $11,000 in pledges if Curtis agreed to challenge the congressman. "I'm happy he'll be able to spend more time with his family, which I feel is really important". A representative from his office did not immediately return a request for comment from Business Insider. He was mum about whether he would pursue a run for governor.
