A 70-year-old IL woman was taken to the hospital with only cuts and bruises despite falling down a crack in the Grand Canyon Tuesday.

Mohave County Sheriff's search and rescue units were deployed to the scene Tuesday afternoon.

The victim wedged herself during the fall, which prevented her from falling to the bottom.

Responding rescue teams said the woman was stuck so tightly, that she was having trouble breathing, and every time she took a breath, she fell a few inches more.

They set up a rope system and lowered a team member down into the crack to secure the victim, who they pulled out.

Sheriff's officials say she sustained several cuts, scratches and bruises.

The woman was subsequently airlifted by Mercy Medical Helicopter to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, for treatment.

Her name and condition weren't immediately available Wednesday.
