It's 4/20, and that means marijuana 'holiday'

On 20 April, known to many as "weed day", we've rounded up some of the best designs on offer from the fast-growing marijuana industry, including a minimal glass pipe and an app-controlled home growing system.

Yes, it seems arbitrary.

Popular pot smoking history of 420 traces the day back to a group of high school stoners in California. But despite the myths, it isn't a California police code, nor is it Bob Marley's birthday (he was born in February) or the number of active chemicals in marijuana. But the state's 420 code actually applies to obstructing entry on public land.

But the rumor sounds a lot like ...

Neither LAPD nor NYPD even have a code 420.

Multiply 12 by 35 and you get 420. Seems a bit of a stretch and Dylan has never confirmed any link.

The story that appears to hold the most water is ...

But according to Chris Conrad, curator of the Oaksterdam Cannabis Museum in Oakland, Calif., 420 started as a secret code among high schoolers in the early 1970s.

The slang is said to come from a group of then-students who called themselves the "Waldos", self-proclaimed for their usual hangout by a wall.

For them, it was an ideal time. It soon caught on throughout the school, and eventually spread to the local music scene, that at the time included some members of the Grateful Dead. It's even the number of a California Senate bill that established the state's medial marijuana program.

And of course, on the calendar every April.
