Madison Falls Short in Competition

The finalists, which rose to the top eight out of a field of 350 communities across the US, competed for first-, second- and third-place prizes worth $3 million, $2 million and $1 million, respectively.

The City of Huntington won first place in the America's Best Communities competition Wednesday night, beating out about 350 other communities that initially entered the competition.

All prize money is going to the city's revitalization plan. All four are part of the Huntington Innovation Project.

Redeveloping the city's Fairfield constructing modern housing at several different levels, grocery stores and other businesses to benefit the neighborhood.The project would be tied in to nearby Cabell-Huntington Hospital.

He said whoever is named "America's Best Community" should be a "real city" with "real problems".

Williams believes the grant will transform the city.

"There are some who will look at you and tell you what you can't do", Williams said.

"This is worst to first", Williams said. Communities advanced in the competition based on the effectiveness of the revitalization plans developed, fine-tuned and implemented over the course of the three-year competition. The eight finalists include: Chicago Lakes Area, Minnesota; Darrington/Arlington, Washington; Huntington, West Virginia; Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Madison, Indiana; Statesboro, Georgia; Tualatin, Oregon; and Valley County/Meadows Valley, Idaho.

The eight finalists gathered this week in Denver, Colorado, the home of sponsoring companies DISH Network and CoBank, to present their revitalization strategies and share progress made in achieving new growth. "With hard work and determination, they have forever changed the trajectory of their community", Maggie Wilderotter, former CEO of Frontier Communications, said in a news release.

The top community will be awarded $3 million, second place will win $2 million and third will receive $1 million. The third-place victor, Statesboro, Georgia, received $1 million.
