According to Dyer, "Once [Muhammad] saw he was wanted for murder, he was not going to go down for shooting a security guard for disrespecting him, but that he was going to kill as many white males as possible".

After the shots were heard, Dyer said the driver of a Pacific Gas & Electric truck arrived at the city's police headquarters to report that a passenger had been shot by a gunman who had approached them on foot. The second person killed was 37-year-old Mark Gassett who was gunned down on Fulton Street.

Mark Greer said he and 58-year-old David Jackson stopped at the Catholic Charities building after running a bank errand because Greer needed to use the restroom.

Randalls, 34, a utility worker for Pacific Gas and Electric Co., was on the job and sitting inside a company vehicle at the time he was shot.

Eddie Valencia said Wednesday that he and Zackary Randalls were friends for 15 years after bonding on a job over a love of music and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It was not immediately clear why security got involved, but the woman started arguing with Carl Williams, a 25-year-old unarmed security guard, police said.

"We don't believe it's a terrorist act", Police Chief Jerry Dyer told reporters about the Tuesday rampage led by suspect Kori Ali Muhammad.

Dyer said Muhammad approached a vehicle in between shootings, but he spared the lives of two Latina women who were in the auto with a child. The gunman reportedly pointed the gun at them as they sat in their vehicle trying to escape, but he did not shoot.

Muhammad was arrested shortly after the shooting and has since given detectives several hours of interviews describing his actions, Dyer said.

Cops say it's not terrorism - but it is a hate crime. He said he fled the scene and hid out on a nearby 7/11 rooftop while police conducted an investigation.

So, police say, he killed him.

The gun has not been located after it was wrapped in clothing and picked up by someone on the scene, Dyer said, describing the man who took it as Hispanic.

"He wouldn't want this to turn into any type of hateful reaction from anybody in the public", Valencia said through tears.

Police say the three men shot in downtown Fresno happened to be on the same block but were singled out at random. He told police he gave himself up easily because, as the chief related, he had "respect for police".

"It looks like a guy carrying his groceries home from the store", said Hughes, 66, who rushed home after receiving a frantic call about the shootings from a neighbor.

Muhammad admitted the killings to officers as they arrested him, according to the chief.

Muhammad is black, and all of Tuesday's victims were white.

Authorities say the man suspected of killing three white men in a racially charged attack in Fresno told police he was "not going to go down for shooting a security guard". He got on the ground once he saw the police.

The suspect showed no remorse while detailing his whereabouts and laughed many times, Dyer said.

The suspect told his family there was a war going on between blacks and whites in America.

Muhammad, who was born Kori Taylor, was taken into custody Tuesday, and is expected to be charged with four murder counts.

Muhammad also repeatedly used the phrase "Black Dragon Lion Hawk" in his Facebook posts, and Levin said such nods to warrior culture are also common in black separatist circles.

After spending the night on top of the 7-Eleven, Muhammad waited to make sure officers left the area and then climbed down Friday morning, the police chief said.
