WRAPUP 5-Pence reassures Japan of USA resolve on North Korea

Earlier, US Vice President Mike Pence warned North Korea not to test the US, adding his country's "era of strategic patience" with Pyongyang was over.

The North Korean deputy envoy asserted that Pyongyang would hold the United States "wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions".

Kim In Ryong told a news conference that "if the US dares opt for a military action", North Korea "is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the U.S".

It comes as the autocratic country vowed to continue carrying out missile tests on a weekly basis and threatened "all out war" if the U.S. takes military action.

Pence and Abe agreed that they needed to persuade China to play a larger role in dealing with North Korea, a Japanese government spokesman said.

At the outset of their meeting, Pence reiterated to Abe his statement in South Korea that the United States has run out of patience with Pyongyang's moves.

The North has warned of a nuclear strike against the United States if provoked.

"North Korea has vastly increased the threat that it poses to the region and global peace, so any rise in tensions is entirely due to the provocative behaviour of North Korea", Ms Bishop said.

It has said it has developed a missile that can strike the mainland United States, but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering the necessary technology, including miniaturising a nuclear warhead.

The US and South Korea have activated the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system, which is capable of intercepting incoming warheads from North Korea.
