What other vegetables are an excellent source of nitrate?

The scientists found that the subjects who drank the beetroot juice with the high dose of nitrate had healthier brains with more oxygen flow than those who drank the juice with little nitrate.

Researchers at Wake Forest University knew that exercise has positive anti-aging effects on the brain, and were looking for ways to increase those benefits.

"But what we showed in this study of hypertensive older adults was that, as compared to exercise alone, adding a beetroot juice supplement to exercise resulted in brain connectivity that closely resembles what you see in younger adults".

When you exercise, the brain's somatomotor cortex, which processes information from the muscles, evaluates and sorts the cues coming in from the body. They may also regulate blood pressure and improve exercise performance and endurance.

This suggested dietary nitrate could help in conditions caused by reduced blood flow, including dementia.

"This is the first experiment to test the combined effects of exercise and beetroot juice on functional brain networks in the motor cortex and secondary connections between the motor cortex and the insula, which support mobility", he added.

The research team - including co-author W. Jack Rejeski of the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC - says that the increased brain connectivity seen among the adults who drank beetroot juice was comparable to the connectivity seen in younger adults.

This was an hour before a moderately intense, 50 minute walk on a treadmill.

Post-exercise analysis showed that, although the study groups has similar levels of nitrate and nitrite in the blood before drinking the juice, the beetroot juice group had much higher levels of nitrate and nitrite than the placebo group after exercise. Your body's chain reaction changes nitrates into nitrite then nitric oxide, which increases blood flow in the body. Studies have already shown it can improve exercise performance in people of various ages.

"Nitric oxide is a really powerful molecule". "It goes to the areas of the body which are hypoxic, or needing oxygen, and the brain is a heavy feeder of oxygen in your body".

The research the latest in a series of findings concerning the effects of beetroot on health.

Drinking a sweet glass of beetroot juice before a workout may help the aging brain perform better, according to a new study.

Previous year they found a daily does of beetroot juice significantly improved exercise endurance and blood pressure in elderly patients with heart failure.

Another study in 2012 showed eating whole beetroots improved running performance among fit adults.
