Buhari Saddened By Death Of Football Fans

The cable fell on a shack in the city of Calabar as Manchester United beat Anderlecht 2-1 in the Europa League last night.

Manchester United have expressed their sorrow at learning that a number of supporters were electrocuted in Nigeria while watching their Europa League game with Anderlecht.

The Cross River State Government has set up a commission of inquiry to cause of an electrocution, which killed many people at a viewing center in Calabar.

According to the statement, the President commiserates with the government and people of Cross River State, and football fans nationwide over the unfortunate incident.

Police said the incident was the result of an issue with an electrical transformer at the viewing centre in which the fans had gathered.

The club tweeted: "Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria, yesterday".

The president prayed that God Almighty grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and comfort all those mourning their irreparable loss.

Also, Manchester United have sent a condolence message to families of the victims.

The police later told PREMIUM TIMES that seven people died while 10 others sustained critical injuries.

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company has not commented on the incident, but authorities have said it is illegal to erect structures under high-tension cables.
