It was inevitable. The PFA Team of the Year was announced and, despite being an excellent side, that most would happily back to represent the finest Premier League stars of the season, there was still some harrumphing and snorts of derision.

The Professional Footballers' Association announced their best 11 of the season thus far on Thursday, and of the 11 players selected by position, Mane was placed within his favoured right wing role.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are competing for the Premier League title and are second in the table, just four points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

The speedy attacking player has been in impeccable form at Anfield this season after joining the club in an African record deal worth around $45.1 million.

Premier League: David de Gea (Manchester United); Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), David Luiz, Gary Cahill (both Chelsea), Danny Rose (Tottenham); N'Golo Kante (Chelsea), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Sadio Mane (Liverpool); Harry Kane (Tottenham), Romelu Lukaku (Everton).
