Electric SUV from China Looks Pretty Legit

NIO, the Chinese-backed electric vehicle startup known for their mad quest to break track records with their EP9 supercar, has finally whipped out plans for a normal auto for regular people.

NIO, the sub-brand of Chinese start-up NextEV, has unveiled its new production vehicle ahead of this week's Shanghai Motor Show: the all-electric ES8 SUV.

In addition to the new vehicle unveiling, the company also announced that it would begin taking pre-orders for the previously revealed NIO EP9 - which has been priced at $1.48 million a piece ...

Because electric cars-especially their batteries-weigh a considerable amount, NIO says it made it a goal to produce a "normally" weighted SUV.

The ES8 will receive a more formal launch announcement later this year, according to Nio.

"[The NIO ES8] is another statement of our vision and technical and manufacturing capabilities", said NIO Founder and Chairman, William Li.

No range figure has been given for the ES8, but the brand did reveal that the vehicle is powered by two electric motors; one for the front wheels and one for the rear, and also has adaptive air suspension. The SUV, branded the ES8, is a long ways away from the manufacturer's flagship autonomous supercar, the EP9. Its length is reported to be 196-inches long with its wheelbase going over 118-inches. The vehicle has been tested in Yakeshi in Inner Mongolia, where temperatures can reach -22 degrees Fahrenheit as well as Melbourne and Madura, Australia where temperatures can reach over 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a best-in-class product that showcases what is possible with electric vehicles.

Originally, Nio built just six EP9s and sold them to early investors. One of the EP9s holds the record for fastest lap by an electric auto of the Nurburgring Nordschliefe, while a further record for fastest autonomous lap was set in February at the Circuit of the Americas.
