Redknapp has had previous spells as The West Ham, Tottenham and QPR manager.

Zola walked out on the St Andrew's club after defeat to Burton Albion on Monday, leaving the Blues just three points above the drop zone with three games remaining.

To say the decision to replace Gary Rowett with Gianfranco Zola in December 2016 was unpopular, is an understatement, and with hindsight it is something that Birmingham's owners may regret.

Redknapp departed his most recent club managerial job in February 2015 when he left Queens Park Rangers and also took charge of the Jordan national team for a spell a year ago.

Steve Cotterill will be his assistant while Redknapp also confirmed the initial deal is until the end of the season before possible talks in the summer over extending it.

They now sit in 20th, just three points above the bottom-three. They've won two out of 22.

An FA Cup victor with Portsmouth in 2008, he led Tottenham to the Champions League quarter-finals during a four-year spell at White Hart Lane. I ain't going to go in there and they are suddenly going to turn into Real Madrid.

"I've gone in there and said, "listen, I don't want nothing, I will come and do it".

Redknapp will initially take charge of the Blues until the end of the season. He last worked in English football with Derby as an advisor.

'Birmingham is a proper club, a good club.

"Players don't need telling they are rubbish - they need to be given some sort of confidence".

'I feel very bad and very sorry. "The club's position is not secure and they are frustrated and I can understand their feelings".

Their final three matches are trips to Aston Villa and Bristol City plus a home match against play-off hopefuls Huddersfield Town.
