Attempts to extinguish a fire which broke out in a Braamfontein building on Tuesday were hampered by a dysfunctional fire hydrant.

The roof of the Braampark Office Park was completely gutted by the massive fire.

"We had to get water from the street".

"One of them climbed up with a bucket of water because he thought it was a small blaze but found that about 25m of the roof was on fire and a bucket of water was not going to help", he said.

"We first thought (there was) smoke because of the guys who were working on the roof".

Zanele Ngumbela, 28, said she'd been having lunch nearby when she saw what at first looked like dust on the roof.

The fire which started on the top floor of the building saw a cloud of dark smoke smouldering over the CBD. "If it hadn't been for our security guards‚ who alerted us‚ we would have been in serious trouble‚" said Selish Govender‚ spokesman for Forum One B. He suspects it was caused by a short circuit.

John Vicente from emergency services says they've prioritised some hotspots.

An employee who works on the top floor said they were fortunate to have escaped. Fortunately there were no injuries but we have started moving all vehicles outside the office park because we are anxious about the structural integrity of the building. "We don't want to put lives in danger by sending them to top floor and they end up falling to the ground floor". "Forensic people from the police's side will come and continue with the investigation".

At this stage it is not known what the cause of the fire was, however, fire fighters are battling the blaze.

The building housed FNB offices.
