Meanwhile in another quarterfinal first leg clash, it was an expected result as hosts Atletico Madrid won a close game against Leicester City, edging them by the scoreline 1-0.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was the Man of the Match as his side came from a goal down to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 on Wednesday, beating Lionel Messi to a massive European milestone in the process.

Ronaldo went on to reveal that he has altered his approach to training to ensure that he is fully fit for the decisive weeks of the campaign, and stressed that he has no qualms about being rested or substituted by Zidane. Two minutes after the break, Ronaldo delivered a right-footed shot from the center of the box to level the match off a solid cross from Daniel Carvajal.

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez is a proud man.

Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer denied Ronaldo and Gareth Bale with fine stops and the tie firmly swung in Real's favour in the 61st minute when Javi Martinez was sent off following two quick-fire yellow cards.

The first-leg turned after the break as Ronaldo equalised, then Real dominated Bayern with the numerical advantage and peppered the Bayern goal.

Ronaldo scored his 100th UEFA goal in his 143rd game, over 11 years after his first (Aug. 9, 2005, against Debrecen).

On Wednesday, the Champions League's all-time top goalscorer became the first player to score 100 goals in European club competitions.

"He was happy of course, but he wasn't too happy as he had chances to score more goals", said Zidane. The return match against Bayern is on Tuesday. Yesterday was a special day, with a very important win.

Cristiano Ronaldo has not quite been his usual ridiculous goalscoring self this season, with questions, slowly but surely, being asked over the Real Madrid superstar's powers waning as age finally catches up. However, we're happy with our performance.

"I thought it was going to be a tough game before I went out onto the pitch and Bayern started the game really strong", he said.

Madrid defender Sergio Ramos added: "We've taken a big step in the tie, but there's still the return leg to come against great opposition, who have shown that they're one of the favourites to win the competition".
