"In some ways South Korea would love to see us stand up to North Korea" because of that, he said.

Kim Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea, was the guest of honor at a grand concert hall in Pyongyang on Sunday for the full orchestral tribute to his late grandfather.

"They don't produce enough food to feed themselves".

The increased tensions came as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US was looking at ways to pressure North Korea to the negotiation table over its nuclear program.

Pence reassured that all options are on the table in dealing with North Korea and the USA will counter any military action by Pyongyang with an overwhelming response.

During a visit to South Korea, he travelled to the Demilitarised Zone dividing the two states, which technically remain at war after the 1950-53 Korean war ended in a truce and not a peace treaty.

In a trip dominated by concerns about North Korea's nuclear intentions, Vice President Mike Pence assured Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe today that the United States is ready to work closely with its Asian allies in the region to achieve "a peaceable resolution and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

North Korea's vice-foreign minister told the BBC Pyongyang would continue to test missiles and would launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike if it thought the U.S. was planning an attack.

"The reality is that most problems around the world require a combination of instruments and you want to use them in balance", he explained.

But officials at Pentagon are believed to be unsure how North Korea would respond if U.S. the shoots down a test missile. China is North Korea's biggest trading partner.

The U.S. Defense Department does not comment on deployments of the WC-135 Constant Phoenix aircraft used to collect samples from the atmosphere to detect and analyze nuclear explosions. However, the United States is in the first phase of deploying the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense anti-ballistic missile system-THAAD-in South Korea.

Ahn was speaking in a conservative stronghold at a time when North Korea has ratcheted up regional tensions with threats of another nuclear or missile test.

Pyongyang has repeatedly thumbed its nose at U.S. demands to halt its nuclear and missile tests and ignored a warning from Mr Pence this week to "not test" the United States.

Earlier this year, China called on the United States and North Korea to give up something to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea's acting president, Hwang Kyo-ahn, at a meeting with top officials on Thursday, repeatedly called for the military and security ministries to maintain vigilance.

Seoul, with its population of 10 million, is also within ballistic missile-striking distance of North Korea. It is rare for council members to wrangle over standard language and the dispute came amid USA and Russian tensions over Moscow's support for President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's civil war.

After Xi's return to China, Trump continued to pressure him.
