The government has called on United Kingdom cities interested in hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games to submit detailed proposals.

"Hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022 could give us an opportunity to step up and show the very best of "Global Britain" as an outward-looking nation that is confident on the world stage", United Kingdom culture secretary Karen Bradley said in a statement. "I would urge cities to consider if they have the desire and capability to stage the Games in 2022 as they could bring benefits not just to their city but across the country".

British cities interested in hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games have been asked by the government of the United Kingdom to submit proposals for staging the event.

The English cities of Birmingham, London and Manchester have expressed an interest in replacing Durban, which was stripped of the hosting rights after a trail of missed deadlines and financial problems.

The government has called for expressions of interest from British cities interesting in hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"This will include looking at important factors such as the economic benefits the Games could deliver to the United Kingdom - and to the host city or cities - through worldwide trade, investment and tourism opportunities, and how potential host cities could benefit as well as the necessary infrastructure and major event delivery experience that potential host cities have".

Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto and Kuala Lumpur are among the other cities believed to be considering a bid to stage the event.
