But coming back to the flagship, if you look at the company's history, Samsung has been recorded to launch a new Galaxy Note flagship in the second half of the year.

The company's overall revenue growth in the first quarter was nearly flat at 50.55 trillion won in the first quarter.

The first quarter is typically a slow season for chipmakers but market circumstances were especially favorable for companies like Samsung that are positioned to quickly and efficiently mass produce microchips. "Greater profit for Samsung means the company could afford greater dividends for shareholders than have been announced already".

Samsung attributed its strong performance to its increased sales of its memory and display businesses products.

"We are encouraged that Samsung Electronics has agreed to take the bold step of optimizing its balance sheet through a cancellation of its legacy holding of treasury shares", Elliott Management said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg. The operating profit grew by 48 percent to 9.9 trillion won mainly on stronger demand for the company's components like memories and displays.

Samsung has started rolling out update that is expected to fix the Red Tint Display Issue that launched with the new Galaxy S8.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of mobile phones as well as memory chips, provides its chips to other companies including archrival Apple. The affected Galaxy S8 owners tried to reach the Samsung's support forums to complain as they were not able to wirelessly charge their devices.

Samsung earlier considered the proposal, but said Thursday it had officially dropped the plan, citing regulatory hurdles and potential risks to its business.

In October of 2016, the company was forced to recall and discontinue the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 flagship smartphone due to a malfunction that caused batteries to overheat and even explode.

In one of its press release regarding its financial earnings in the first quarter of 2017, the Korean electronics giant confirmed that it will be getting a new flagship model in its flagship lineup of phones later in the year.

It has always been said that the iPhone 8 will be a premium handset and sport a curved OLED screen, much like the Galaxy S8.
