- Rory McIlroy will have an MRI on Monday to see if there's new damage to the same spot on his back which he injured in January in South Africa. He'll head to Belfast on Monday for the scan.

"It's in the same area as what the injury was at the start of the year, " said McIlroy, who will get the MRI done when he returns to his native Northern Ireland. "If that injury was an eight or a nine in terms of pain and soreness and stiffness, this is around a four or five".

"I think this week it's just about trying to manage that and get through the week and try to play with what I have", he said", and then next week try to get that better and try to recover and try to play a good stretch of golf from here through the summer and obviously focus on the majors".

Speaking after the second round at the Players Championship, McIlroy acknowledged that he had aggravated his back. "I feel like I can distinguish what the difference is between the two, so it's about making sure there's no spasm and it doesn't really tighten up around the joint". "I took three weeks off and then I went back at it on Friday and instead of maybe gradually building it up again, I hit balls for four or five hours on Friday and did the same on Saturday".

"Yeah, I've been struggling with it a bit this week, sort of felt it for the first time on Sunday", McIlroy said.

"Maybe I should have just taken it a bit easier over the weekend, but I was excited to get back, excited to play again", he added.
