It puts immediate pressure on South Korea's President Moon Jae-in, who campaigned on a platform of better engagement with the North.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported the missile was launched from the city of Kusong, north of the capital Pyongyang and traveled an estimated 435 miles (700 kilometers) before falling into the ocean.

Kishida says the global community should prioritize efforts to implement the existing U.N. Security Council resolutions barring North Korea's missile and nuclear technology more thoroughly.

"The launch also comes as troops from the U.S., Japan and two European nations gather near Guam for drills that are partly a message to North Korea".

He especially instructed the military to speed up the establishment of South Korea's own missile defense system, called the Korea Air and Missile Defense (KAMD).

The North has staged two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the start of a year ago in its quest to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the USA mainland.

Given the height and flight distance, officials here said, the missile test is believed to have been successful.

The launch, however, "did not pose a threat to North America", the US Pacific Command said.

The South's foreign ministry issued a statement denouncing the North's behavior.

China called on Sunday for restraint and for no party to do anything to exacerbate tension after North Korea fired a ballistic missile in defiance of calls to rein in its weapons program.

It demanded that Pyongyang stop provocative acts and return to the path of negotiations for denuclearization.

One recent missile launch staged in March saw three North Korean missiles falling provocatively close to Japan, sparking alarm in Tokyo.

The North has conducted five nuclear tests despite United Nations sanctions and is also developing long-range missiles.

Kim and McMaster also agreed to bolster efforts to seek the denuclearization of North Korea.

While military option against North Korea remains on the table, Washington is also pursuing diplomatic channels to address the issue.

The latest test - the seventh this year - came a day after senior North Korean official Choi Sun-hee said her government would be willing to start talks with the U.S. "if the conditions are set".

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have heightened in recent weeks due to Pyongyang's nuclear programme and missile tests and threats from Trump that the United States could take unilateral action against it in retaliation.

"China opposes the DPRK's violation of the Security Council's resolutions".

"At present the situation on the peninsula is complex and sensitive, and all relevant parties should exercise restraint and do nothing to further worsen regional tensions".

An intercontinental ballistic missile is considered to have a range of more than 6,000 km (3,700 miles).

North Korea has launched a ballistic missile, the first launch since newly elected South Korean president Moon Jae-in has taken office.

Moon, the first liberal leader in Seoul in almost a decade, said as he took his oath of office that he'd be willing to visit the North if the circumstances were right.

The sanctions ban ships owned or hired by North Korea from operating in USA waters or docking at U.S. ports.
