The overview comes Wednesday during Google's annual conference for thousands of computer programmers.

It comes as Google, Apple and Amazon.com are competing to establish dominance in the voice-powered digital assistant segment, which many in the industry believe will supplant keyboards and touch screens as a primary way that users interact with technology, the news agency said.

"The single most visible change in O is boot time", Google's Stephanie Saad Cuthbertson said.

The addition of machine learning to existing Google apps will make them smarter to use.

Google Assistant, which debuted a year ago on Google's own hardware, is now available across more than 100 million devices.

"Siri's got company, and all these other guys are pretty serious about it", said Gartner analyst Brian Blau. For example, if you're looking at a Wi-Fi router, point the Assistant at it and the details of the router will be captured allowing your phone to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network simply by pointing Google Lens at the password.

Advanced "Lens" features are being added first to the Google Photo application, which is available free. Take a photo or point the camera on a flower and Google will tell what flower is that.

How do you think this capability improvement in Google's photo recognition will affect you?

On the software side, Pichai said Google is working on developing neural nets capable of developing their own neural nets in an automated process he described as machines "learning to learn". Google says there's no setup or app required - just ask the assistant to make the call and it'll handle the task.

"Soon, with Google Lens, your assistant will be able to have a conversation about what you see".

There was one final bit of good news for Spotify fans too - its free, ad-based service will now be coming to Google Home too. Previously, the assistant worked only on Google's Android software. Sure, Google's idea was to make it a feature founded on natural interaction - or as natural talking to your phone could be - but hey, sometimes you might not want to speak your queries out loud.

As a result, Android O will feature new "wise limits" to background location and execution for apps. These ads are an expansion of Google's previously announced "Universal Ad Campaigns", which are created to simplify the process of advertising across Google's online properties - including the Google Play Store, Search, YouTube, the AdMob in-app network and the millions of sites on the Google Display Network.
