"The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations". That came hours after The New York Times reported on a memo authored by Comey that said Trump asked the then-FBI director end his investigation into Flynn. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said panel members were also inviting Comey to testify at an undetermined date.

Trump fired Comey last week, and the president said in a later interview that he was unhappy with the FBI's probe into his campaign's possible links to Russian interference in the 2016 election.

If the Trump administration deemed it appropriate, Putin said Russian Federation could hand over a transcript of Trump's meeting with Lavrov to USA lawmakers to reassure them that no secrets were revealed.

In the face of unfairness, "you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight. Things will work out just fine", he said. "The president must be impeached".

Authorities said Russian Federation meddled in November's election to benefit Trump.

President Trump is conducting interviews Wednesday for four potential replacements for Federal Bureau of Investigation director following his surprise firing of James Comey earlier this month, the White House announced.

In addition to the Judiciary Committee asking for evidence relating to Comey's interactions with the two presidents, the committee also asked for information on contacts with Justice Department officials in both administrations.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee, is trying to get in touch with former FBI Director James Comey to testify in a public hearing as soon as next week. Ryan backed Chaffetz's request.

Democratic lawmakers have demanded that the Justice Department name a special prosecutor to investigate potential ties between Mr Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Representative Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican, went further.

Senator Richard Blumenthal of CT, a member of the Judiciary Committee, called the memo as reported "powerful evidence of obstruction of justice".

The commotion around Trump's statements on Flynn has somewhat obscured his no less chilling request that Comey jail journalists for publishing information based on leaks - something that has never happened in the history of this country.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Mr Trump is accused of telling Mr Comey.

In order for a president to be impeached, a resolution for impeachment must pass the House by a simple majority.

The reports stem from a memo Comey wrote shortly after an Oval Office meeting in February.

"A lot of people don't do that", the Maryland Democrat said.

Other Republicans are also sticking by the intelligence committees, saying they weren't confident that an independent commission or special prosecutor was a better option.

Trump abruptly fired FBI director James Comey last Tuesday, supposedly because of his poor handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server.

Some Trump critics say the conversation with Comey was tantamount to obstruction of the FBI's investigation.

But Colorado U.S. Sen.

U.S. stocks opened sharply lower on Wednesday after the reports of the memo. "If in fact what was said in the memo is true, it's very concerning and we need to get to the bottom of that".
