It'd be unusual for the White House to elevate an FBI agent to the role of director, and McCabe during a Senate hearing last week broke with the White House's explanations for Comey's firing and its dismissive characterization of the Russian Federation investigation.

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, told MSNBC that Congress would want to look at the tapes, if they exist.

Trump said that he was anxious for the results of the FBI investigation into Russia's efforts to disrupt the election. He said in an interview on Thursday with NBC News that Comey gave him this assurance during the White House dinner and in two phone conversations. When Comey refused to do so - Comey instead merely promised Trump that he would always be honest with him - Trump waited until later in the dinner and then repeated his request.

Comey came to the job with a reputation for courage and independence.

Changing rationales for the firing offered by White House aides added an element of chaos to the president's action.

"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy!" he tweeted.

Trump told Fox News he would decide in "the next couple of weeks" whether the briefings would continue.

The Russians used the photos to troll the White House in its social media posts Wednesday.

All along, Trump's spokesmen insisted that his decision was not shaped in any way by his growing fury with the Russian Federation controversy, including the FBI investigation overseen by Comey into Russia's interference with the 2016 presidential election and whether there had been any coordination with Trump associates.

"Jim Comey is a man of principle and integrity", U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-8) who represents Bucks and portions of Montgomery counties said.

His letter focuses on the fallout from an FBI investigation, now closed, into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server to store sensitive information while secretary of state. "But very well known, highly respected, really talented people and that's what we want for the Federal Bureau of Investigation". McCabe became acting director after Comey was sacked, but has shown a repeated willingness to break from White House explanations of the ouster and its characterizations of the Russian Federation investigation.

Even before Trump's provocative tweets, the White House was scrambling to clarify why Comey was sacked.

Also interviewed Saturday were Michael J. Garcia, a former prosecutor and associate judge on New York's highest court; GOP Sen.

"He viewed Mr Comey as eager to step in front of TV cameras and questioned whether his expanding media profile was warping his view of the Russian Federation investigation, the officials said".
