A full autopsy reported has not yet been completed, but the examiner's office did state in an official release that the "cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide". A police spokesman told two Detroit newspapers that the singer was found with a band around his neck.

"There is no additional information at this time", the Wayne County office added.

"We want to make sure that fans of Chris's music will have a place to go to remember his life and influences, and that's what our programming is going to be all about for the next couple of days". Soundgarden's current tour kicked off in late April and was planned to run through May 27.

What local Detroit media are reporting: As of this writing at 7:41 a.m. Detroit Police are telling WXYZ-7 that it was a possible suicide, saying that he was found on the bathroom floor after a family friend checked on him at the request of Cornell's wife. "That's always a challenge in three and a half or four minutes - to be able to do that, to be able to do it directly".

"I don't even know what to say".

But at 16, he grew serious about music, learning to play the drums while also working as a busboy and dishwasher. In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone Cornell referenced drinking problems, marital issues, and depression.

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney were among the most high-profile bands to come out of Seattle and dominated the pop culture landscape of the early and mid-1990s.

Rocker Dave Navarro mourned the loss of Cornell, tweeting: "Such a bad and sad loss!" "It was like a Detroit, only northwest kind of".

The video shows Cornell jamming out and playing guitar as he sang "Spoonman", a hit single from Soundgarden's 1994 album, "Superunknown". The band would break up at the beginning of 1997, but by 2001, Cornell would link up with Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine to begin his next chapter heading Audioslave in supergroup formation.

Tributes continue to flow for Cornell, who was a leading figure in the 90s grunge music scene as the head of Soundgarden, and later moving on to work with super-group Audioslave. Two members of Mother Love Bone went on to form Pearl Jam and they joined Cornell on a tribute project to Wood - Temple of the Dog - which helped introduce Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder to the world.

This year's "Six Degrees" program was going to be for musician David Byrne, but with the sudden death of Cornell, KEXP DJs chose to "shift gears" and pay tribute to him instead.

He also released solo albums and, Nielsen Music said, as a band member and solo act, the singer sold nearly 15 million albums and 8.8 million digital songs in the United States. "There's no doubt that Soundgarden's music is very dark and melancholy at times". Medical examiner: Chris Cornell's death rul. It appeared on his second solo album, "Carry On". Elton John tweeted, "Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of @chriscornell. A great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man".
