Senators: Deputy AG knew of Comey firing before writing memo

Comey reportedly wrote up a memo about having been asked that by Trump.

Democratic senators had been prepared to press him to appoint a special prosecutor, and his decision defused their complaints, leading to praise instead.

By design, the special counsel will keep their investigation secret, and it could take years to determine if a prosecutable offense has occurred.

The posts, shortly before 8am (local time), were a stark contrast to his muted reaction to the announcement of Mueller's appointment last evening. "With an investigation in the House, Senate and Department of Justice underway, I believe now is the time to return our focus to helping Americans by reforming our tax code and getting more folks back to work".

Trump once again said he had expected that his sacking of Comey would have gotten strong bipartisan approval, given Comey's public statements about the FBI's probe of Hillary Clinton's emails days before the election. "He is respected, he is talented, and he has the knowledge and ability to do the right thing".

Asked about the early morning tweet, Sen.

The appointment of a special counsel might not be the ideal way to get to the bottom of the growing list of questions surrounding Donald Trump and Russian Federation.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill welcomed the Justice Department action, but House and Senate Republican leaders said they would go on with their own investigations of the Russian Federation matter.

Asked about possible obstruction of justice, Republican House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters the special counsel would "follow the facts where ever they may lead" and that "it is premature to prejudge anything at this point".

Let's even accept that the shifting explanations for each new revelation represent genuine confusion in a new administration and not clumsy collusion.

Trump clearly knew what he wanted to say as he took a few questions at a news briefing with visiting Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

President Trump disputes Comey's account.

Former FBI director Robert Mueller will soon begin his new job as independent counsel in the Russian probe.

Senators said Mr Rosenstein steered clear of specifics while making clear Mr Mueller has wide latitude to pursue the investigation wherever it leads, potentially including criminal charges.

The Senate Intelligence Committee and House Government Oversight Committee have each requested Comey testify before their panels. Adding further, Trump also noted "I actually thought when I made that decision... that it would be a bipartisan decision because you look at all of the people on the Democratic side, not only the Republican side, that were saying such bad things about Director Comey".

That was on Wednesday night.

Donald Trump is embarking on his first foreign trip as president but will board Air Force One facing considerable domestic turbulence.

He later reposted the same tweet, after correcting his misspelling of the word "counsel". He did not provide examples or evidence of any "illegal acts".
