The groups striking represent four different union contracts and include wireless workers in 36 states and D.C.; wireline workers in California, Nevada and CT; and DIRECTV technicians in California and Nevada.

"We will no longer stand by as AT&T hems and haws at the bargaining table, keeping its own workers from achieving the American Dream they once promised", said Dennis Trainor, Vice President of CWA District 1. "We are not engaged in a productive exchange here".

"This would be the first time AT&T Mobility workers go on strike, potentially disrupting a large number of retail stores across the country this weekend", CWA said.

Workers have been mobilizing all week, with informational picketing outside call centers and wireless stores, preparing for the strike, national union leaders said. This company made $13 billion in profits a year ago, but is now denying its workers, who are making this company so profitable, the contract they deserve.

"They're trying to close up corporate stores to open up authorized retailer stores". As part of its next contract, the union wants to bar AT&T from changing its commission structure unilaterally.

About 500 AT&T workers are striking right now in Evansville. AT&T said the stoppage is slated to end at midnight Sunday.

If the AT&T strike goes on for weeks at the time like the Verizon strike, it could result in a disappointing jobs report.

The CWA was involved in a 45-day strike previous year by 40,000 Verizon wireline workers that ended in June. The two groups' contract negotiations are separate from those of the wireless workers. But the company is under increasing pressure on Wall Street to cut costs, as revenue in both its older wired telephone business as well as the once-fast-growing wireless unit have declined. One of its rivals, T-Mobile, is strictly wireless, which some analysts say gives it an advantage in a rapidly approaching future in which many customers will receive both phone and video service over wireless networks alone.

Make it your business. It is awaiting Justice Department approval for its proposed acquisition of Time Warner.

Employees say striking is the best way to get the company's attention and are hopeful they can find a solution.
