For the first quarter of 2017, the revenues of Chinese vendors grew 180 percent as against the same quarter previous year, according to CMR's India Quarterly Mobile Handset Market Review. The Chinese brands contributed 49% to the overall mobile handsets revenue and 51% to the revenue of smartphones, on the other hand global handset makers constituted 40% share of the overall mobile handsets and 41% in smartphones. The IDC report recently said that Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Lenovo are leading the Indian market easily.

Also, with over 57 million mobile handsets sold, the industry recorded a fall of about 11 percent over Q4' CY 2016.

Micromax was the only Indian brand to feature in the top five while Samsung dominated the market with a 26.23% market share, followed by Chinese brand Itel with 8.58%, Xiaomi 6.37% and Vivo 6.07%. We can't deny the fact that in the next quarter we may see that happening.

Samsung of South Korea, and the Chinese Itel and Xiaomi were the top market players with 27 per cent, nine per cent and six per cent market share, respectively, in terms of volume. In Q1 2016, Samsung, Apple, Micromax, Lenovo, and Intex were the top five players with 35.2 percent, 10 percent, 9.7 percent, 8.3 percent and 6.5 percent marker shares respectively.

According to Krishna Mukherjee, Telecom Analyst with CMR, "In the smartphone arena, the Chinese brands have already kicked out domestic players from the top five list, and shortly, we will see Chinese players wiping out the Indian brands from the top five chart of overall mobile handset segment too. Since 2009, brands like Micromax and Intex have shown their presence in the top five list". However, in the smartphone space, the number third rank is bagged by Vivo Mobile India followed by GDN Enterprises.

Narinder Kumar, Telecom Analyst with CMR said, "Market consolidation in the number of overall brands operating in India took a temporary pause in Q1 2017". In the future, we will further see consolidation in number of OEMs for Indian mobile handset market. "Contract manufacturers in India like Rising Stars and GDN Enterprises will see growth in the coming quarters", added Kumar.
