Italian prosecutors are investigating a man who stabbed a policeman and two army officers at Milan's main train station for alleged global terrorism, an investigative source said on Friday.

Ismail Hosni, 20, attacked the three men on Thursday night after they asked to see his identity papers.

According to local media, the assailant was stopped by two military officers and a member of the special railway police as part of a routine check on passengers around 8 pm local time.

None of the three reported life-threatening injuries, but all three had to be taken to a local hospital. One of the soldiers, who received an injury to the right shoulder, was discharged a few hours after the attack. The Italian news agency ANSA says a Facebook page that appears to be Hosni's praises the Islamic State group in several posts.

Hosni carried out the attack with two kitchen knives after he was asked to produce ID, Milan Police Commissioner Marcello Cardona told journalists.

Hosni is being held in Milan's San Vittore Prison pending formal charges.
