CLEVELAND - LeBron James claimed that some type of adversity would be necessary for the Cleveland Cavaliers to find their ultimate playoff success following an epic meltdown in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Because of them, the Cavs came from 16 points behind to defeat the Boston Celtics, 112-99, and take a 3-1 lead in what has become a very competitive series.

James accepted responsibility afterward, saying simply "I didn't have it" during a postgame news conference that was preceded by a run-in with a heckling fan in the hallway. James spun around and asked the man to repeat himself. Usually you only really get to employ the element of surprise once, so it will be interesting to see how this group fares in Games 4 and 5.

"I mean, he's human, so he's going to have a nice like this", Tyronn Lue, 40, the Cavaliers coach, said after the game, per ESPN.

The Boston Celtics overcame the odds in Game 3 to record that thrilling last-second victory, but can they make it two in a row? Me, personally, I didn't have it. "We have a great game plan and we look forward to the matchup". But me, personally, I didn't have it.

A moment later, he added, "That's all I've got to say about my performance".

There wasn't much to gush about, that's for sure. With about 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Irving pulled off this fun pass fake on the way to the hoop.

He scored 41 points in a potential elimination game to get the Cavs back on track in Game 5 of the 2016 Finals, and hit what was essentially the game-winning three over Stephen Curry in Game 7 to help deliver Cleveland the title.

And in the third quarter, the All-Star guard had James' back again, keeping the Cavs on their collision course with the Warriors.

Irving finished with a playoff career-high 42 points - 21 of those points in the third - and James had 34.

CLEVELAND - The struggles of the second half of Game 3 continued for the Cleveland Cavaliers at the start of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Quicken Loans Arena Tuesday night. Coach Brad Stevens said no decision had been made yet on whether Thomas would undergo an operation but he reiterated that he is out for the remainder of the playoffs. But whether the Celtics take Fultz or the other candidate for the top spot, UCLA star Lonzo Ball, both prospects play the same position: point guard. They scrapped. They have a scrappy team. He knows that. We know that. "I hope we can continue to play with that chip on our shoulder and come out the same way next game". His season is over because of a hip injury, and although he's not around, his presence was felt by his teammates who rallied to keep their season alive. In Game 1 against Boston, LeBron dominated, scoring 38 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out seven assists.

If that's the case, the Celtics will need to perform just as well as they did in Game 3, if not better, for Tuesday's contest. When he gets going like that, he's tough to stop. For the first two quarters, the Celtics played some of their crispest basketball, cutting, defending and racking up 17 assists on 21 buckets. "I've missed a couple of dunks in my career, but I think I've made more than I've missed". The loss also gives the Golden State Warriors a chance to get at least three days more rest than the Cavs, given that the Warriors completed their third sweep of the 2017 playoffs Monday night.
