At Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, South Korea and United States say they're continuing to work toward THAAD deployment Minister of National Defense Han Min-koo recently described the investigation into omissions in the Blue House's THAAD report as a "fully domestic measure".

The North regularly threatens to destroy the United States and says its missile and nuclear programmes are needed to counter USA aggression.

Now Secretary of Defense General James Mattis is letting Americans know about the kind of threat North Korea might pose.

"The current situation on the peninsula is complex and sensitive", he said.

A defiant North Korea on Sunday said it "fully rejects" newly expanded United Nations sanctions over its nuclear and missile tests - blasting the measures as "a crafty hostile act".

Hua said China "respects and safeguards all countries' freedom of navigation and overflight" in the area "but definitely opposes certain country's show of force in the South China Sea under the pretext of navigation and overflight freedom, challenging and threatening China's sovereignty and security".

China condemned Mattis's "irresponsible remarks", foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying arguing China had an indisputable sovereignty over the Spratly Islands - known by China as the Nansha Islands - where the United States navy recently made its first freedom of navigation patrol under the Trump presidency.

"The Security Council is sending a clear message to North Korea today - stop firing ballistic missiles or face the consequences", Haley said.

This is a weekly look at the latest developments in the South China Sea, the location of several territorial conflicts that have raised tensions in the region.

While Hailey said the United States wants a negotiated solution to the North's nuclear program and isn't seeking regime change, she reiterated that "all options for responding to future provocations remain on the table".

Turnbull's address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual defense and security summit, follows China's moves to build a series of artificial islands on shoals and reefs in contested waters in the South China Sea, which has sparked concern among its neighbors.

"Bear with us", Mattis said.

Patience with North Korea is running out in Washington and regionally. Traditionally, the United States and China have negotiated new sanctions before involving the other council members.

Mr Robinson also expects Australian officials at the meeting to stress Canberra's desire for the USA to have a broader economic and diplomatic engagement with Asia.

In an apparent reference to China, he also opposed countries militarising artificial islands and enforcing excessive maritime claims unsupported by worldwide law.

From left, Malaysian Minister of Defense Hishammuddin Hussein, U.S. "We can not and will not accept unilateral, coercive changes to the status quo".

"While these decisions are disappointing, we should take care not to rush to interpret an intent to engage on different terms as one not to engage at all", Turnbull said.

Tillerson insisted Washington wanted a productive relationship with Beijing, but said China must pull its weight on important diplomatic issues.
