Agassi, who started working with Djokovic five days ago after the Serb sacked his coaching team, will be at Roland Garros only until the end of this week.

Zverev, coming off a title at the Italian Open, dropped the first set 6-4 then took the second 6-3.

Djokovic will now face either compatriot Janko Tipsarevic or Portugal's Joao Sousa in the second round.

Top-seeded Andy Murray is safely through to the second round of the French Open after beating Andrey Kuznetsov of Russian Federation 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Reporter Kate Battersby noted that Agassi was "less than a picture of relaxation, fidgeting in his chair and keeping up a relentless point-by-point commentary with Djokovic's brother Marko".

There was no hiccup on court Suzanne Lenglen for Rafael Nadal, who started his bid to win a 10th title at Roland Garros with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Benoit Paire.

Both before the match and in courtside comments following his win, Nadal described Paire as a risky opponent, and the Frenchman played with more freedom in a closer second set as the Spaniard lost his edge.

The Spaniard, whose last Grand Slam triumph came at Roland Garros in 2014, improved his incredible French Open record to 73 wins and just two losses.

With eight-times grand slam champion Agassi making a fast exit from the stands at the conclusion of the match, Djokovic heaped praise on his new coach. "I'm feeling good, I'm playing good tennis and I'm happy to be back in Paris". Was not an easy opponent in the first round, obviously.

"I'm really enjoying it so far", Djokovic said of his coaching relationship with the former No. 1-ranked American.

"I just played very bad games on my serve", he admitted after his 6-3 6-4 6-2 win.

Spain's Rafael Nadal volleys the ball to France's Benoit Paire.

Kristina Mladenovic played through pain to hold off Jennifer Brady of the US and reach the second round of the French Open.

Other Top 10-seeded players into the second round on Monday were No. 5 Milos Raonic who defeated Belgian Steve Darcis 6-3, 6-4, 6-2; No. 7 Marin Cilic who dismissed Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-3, 6-3; and No. 10 David Goffin who had little trouble with Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

In-form Ukrainian Elina Svitolina moved swiftly into the second round of the French Open, easing through a potentially tricky encounter against Yaroslava Shvedova with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. "I think she has moments where she's unbelievable".

Women's 1st rd: Samantha Stosur (Aus) bt Kristina Kucova (Svk) 7-5 6-1, Zhang Shuai (Chn) bt Donna Vekic (Cro) 7-5 6-4, Caroline Wozniacki (Den) bt Jaimee Fourlis (Aus) 6-4 3-6 6-2, Karolina Pliskova (Cze) bt Zheng Saisai (Chn) 7-5 6-2.
