"Bhim Army's Deoband Vidhan Sabha president Deepak Kumar and Saharanpur district president Praveen Gautam have been arrested from near Sun City Colony at Malhipur Road", Saharanpur City Circle Officer Mukesh Chandra Mishra had said.

The UP police had declared a reward of Rs 12,000 for any information leading to Chandrashekhar and his aides' arrest. Earlier, the Bhim Army leader was reportedly hiding in Punjab's Ferozpur district for a few days before proceeding towards Himachal.

Chandrashekhar, the leader of an Indian caste-based movement, has been arrested for allegedly fuelling violence in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this week, Chandrashekhar had announced he was willing to surrender if 37 "innocent" Dalits are released on bail. As many as 206 arrests have been made so far, including that of Chandrasekhar, who has been booked under three FIRs, he said. Chandrasekhar is believed to be the mastermind behind the May 9 attack when a police chowki was set on fire and several vehicles were torched by an angry mob.

Two persons were killed and over two dozen others injured when members of thakur and dalit communities clashed following a dispute over taking out a procession at Shabbirpur village in the district last month.

Chandrashekhar had come into limelight after organising a demonstration in Delhi's Jantar Mantar in protest against violence against Dalits in Saharanpur.

"I feel that the UP government has failed to address the issues of the Dalits". The chief minister has lost control over the police and the administration.

On May 9, Chandrasekhar had called for a Dalit mahapanchayat but the police denied permission for the same.

Chandrashekhar Azad "Ravan" went absconding about a month ago when the UP Police implicated him in the Saharanpur riots.

The sudden rise of the Bhim Army under the leadership of Chandrashekhar has unnerved BSP supremo Mayawati, making her all the more anxious after he succeeded in mobilising Dalits in western UP.
