Tapwrit Wins Belmont Stakes

J Boys Echo is one of five Belmont runners who skipped the Preakness after running in the Derby, a route taken previous year by Belmont victor Creator. His trainer Todd Pletcher has two shots at winning the $1.5 million race on his home track: He will saddle 6-1 fourth choice Tapwrit and one-eyed Patch.

This year's Triple Crown bid was scuppered when Kentucky Derby victor Always Dreaming finished a distant eighth behind Cloud Computing at the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico at the end of May.

The withdrawal left the Belmont Stakes, the third leg in the U.S. Triple Crown, with only 11 horses in the field. "We thought both of our horses were training well and had the right pedigrees to handle the distance".

Epicharis was scratched from Saturday's Belmont Stakes after failing to pass the prerace veterinary exam performed by Anthony Verderosa, the chief examining veterinarian for the New York Racing Association. "Big Red", as he was known, became the ninth Triple Crown victor and the first for 25 years. "I don't think it would be a surprise if either of them ran well".

"The thing I would emphasize is that this is a routine process", Palmer said.

The race, known as the "test of champions", is the oldest of the three races that make up the Triple Crown.

Tapwrit paid $12.60 for his fourth win in eight starts after being timed in 2:30.02. We were hoping he had enough when it came to crunch time. The 58-year-old trainer has never raced in the US before. It was a two-horse race to the finish line, with Tapwrit gaining the lead in the final furlong.

Irish War Cry is another with significant chances after being rested for the Preakness Stakes following an uncharacteristic flat performance in the Kentucky Derby.

Elsewhere the Acorn Stakes is the first Grade 1 race on the card and in this one Abel Tasman will be very tough to beat if coming here in the same form as she did when she won the Kentucky Oaks.

Behind the first three were Gormley, Senior Investment, Twisted Tom, Lookin At Lee, Meantime, J Boys Echo and Multiplier.

Hollywood Handsome was pulled up after clipping heels with the horse in front of him, causing jockey Florent Geroux to lose his stirrups in the first turn. "I nearly went down".
