PARIS Claudio Ranieri, the veteran Italian coach who led Leicester City to their English Premier League title last season against all the odds, has taken over at Nantes, the Ligue 1 club said on Thursday.

The former Leicester City manager was very close to becoming Nantes manager, and he still is, perhaps even closer, but he certainly hadn't signed on the dotted line, and hadn't been announced.

French reports claim Claudio Ranieri could yet take charge of Crystal Palace despite an apparent agreement with FC Nantes.

Ranieri, who previously earned promotion to Ligue 1 as Monaco manager before leading them to second place in their first season back in the top flight, is excited by the challenge Nantes would present.

Ranieri has been out of management since his controversial sacking by Leicester just nine months after winning the Premier League title, and it remains to be seen whether there's a last minute surprise appointment in store.

Ranieri's move to replace Sergio Conceicao is reportedly being held up due to a Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) regulation stipulating head coaches in Ligue 1 must be under the age of 65.

Speaking to Mediaset Premium, Ranieri said of Domenech: "We are almost there, even if it's not yet official. Plus if it's Domenech... he has always been a bit freakish".

"I'm convinced by their project", he added. That shows me good work can be done here.
