Fallin said she was grateful legislative leaders worked quickly this past session to pass a measure that would make Oklahoma compliant with the REAL ID Act. Homeland Security's latest extension lasts until October 10. The state previously had been granted an extension through July 10.

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety announced Friday that the state has received a Real ID extension.

That means Virginia residents can continue to use their existing driver's licenses and identification cards to access secure federal facilities and military bases and to board domestic flights.

Without the extension, federal agencies would have been prohibited from accepting Oklahoma driver's licenses as proper identification cards. "We will request additional extensions until we are fully compliant with the REAL ID Act".

Officials hope that the Department of Homeland Security will acknowledge the state's progress and grant extensions until the state achieves full compliance with the REAL ID Act and implementing regulations.

Oklahoma's compliance efforts have been more than a decade in the making and are likely to take about two more years to fully implement.

State legislators passed a bill, which was then signed by Fallin, earlier this year that allows state officials to begin working on a compliant system.

Beginning on January 22, 2018, a driver's license or state ID from a state that is not compliant with the REAL ID Act will not be accepted to board a commercial aircraft within the United States.
