President Donald Trump met with Bob Mueller the day before he was announced as special counsel to oversee the investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, Principal Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Thursday.

Trump's digital volley appeared to be trained at Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who recommended the firing last month of James Comey - an nearly unprecedented move that could yet imperil Trump's presidency. "Witch Hunt" he tweeted from the White House shortly before leaving for Miami.

The Justice Department's investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election is looking at Kushner's multiple roles in the Trump administration, including the Trump campaign's 2016 data analytics operation; his relationship with former national security adviser Michael Flynn; and Kushner's own contacts with Russians, according to United States officials briefed on the probe.

The Washington Post, citing unidentified officials, reported on Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the Republican president for possible obstruction of justice. Mueller also has expansive powers to investigate any matters that develop from his initial investigation.

It was unclear whether the president's comment confirming he was under investigation was based on direct knowledge or media reports that Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey. He then, as he does nearly daily, referred to the Justice Department's Russian Federation election meddling probe as a "Witch Hunt". The Comey dismissal could become part of a widening investigation into whether the President tried to interfere with the ongoing Russian Federation probe.

The White House has directed questions for details to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

The transition official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss post-election decisions publicly. But soon after the abrupt termination, Trump told NBC News that he had been going to fire Comey regardless of any recommendations.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump sent two tweets attacking his former opponent. Pence headed the Trump transition until inauguration day.

The Twitter attacks came as Vice President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.

Mueller's investigators have asked for information and will talk to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers, according to a source, who said they have also sought information from recently retired NSA Deputy Director Richard Ledgett. The memo asks for preservation of electronic communications and data, telephone logs, audio recordings, videos, calendars and other items.

Trump wrote, "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!" "Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?", Trump tweeted just before 4 p.m. EDT. The widened Russian Federation probe could have far-reaching repercussions for Trump's presidency, transforming his closest aides into witnesses and sucking yet more political oxygen out of the West Wing.

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story". In an address to the country, Trump struck a notably less partisan tone in response to his first major domestic crisis.
