A Capitol Hill Police officer walks past an automobile with the driver's window damaged at the scene of a shooting in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, where House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. was shot at a Congressional baseball practice.

The bullet that had hit Scalise was a single rifle round that "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding".

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", said Dr. Jack Sava at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

The House Republican baseball team had been practicing for weeks in early mornings at the Alexandria site for Thursday's annual congressional baseball game against Democratic lawmakers' team. Four others were also shot, and suspect James T. Hodgkinson was killed by police. Leaders decided the game would go on as scheduled at Nationals Park in Washington, home of the city's professional baseball team, and the Democrats won, 11 to 2.

"Our family asks that you continue to pray for Steve ... and all of those hurt in this attack", Jennifer Scalise said in the statement.

Ticket sales picked up after Wednesday's shooting, eventually setting an attendance record, the organizers said, as attendees such as Alexander Hilten, 16, of Arlington, Va., chose to come to the game for the first time.

The doctors said that while Scalise remains in critical condition, they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition". Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident.

"ATF has conducted traces on these weapons and has determined that both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees", the bureau said in a statement. "We continue to seek information on any encounters the public may have had with him in his home state of IL or in Alexandria".

Scalise's trauma surgeon said Friday he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", even though the lawmaker arrived at the hospital Wednesday at imminent risk of death.

"The. ways they could do that is you've ever been treated by a mental physician or in a mental hospital, or you've been convicted of a felony, or have been convicted of domestic battery", said Wagner. That social media and letters to the editor showed Hodgkinson to be an ardent liberal who hated congressional Republicans gave the attacks an very bad partisan overtone and inevitably led Rep. Peter King, R-Iowa, Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and others to blame it on the left's harsh criticism of President Trump.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., offered his thoughts and prayers after the shooting and endorsed the decision to play ball.

"We're going to play our hardest to win, each team will". Hunt is not Scalise's doctor and has not seen any of his medical information beyond what has been reported through the news media. "I know we'll be thinking about each of them as they take the field tonight". The announcer's mention of Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded in the attack Wednesday, brought the masses to their feet. Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

"I did tell Joe that I love him before the game and I love him after the game".
