The former Spain global was somewhat of a surprise appointment made by United late last week as they announced him as the successor to Garry Monk - who has recently taken up a managerial position at fellow Championship outfit Middlesbrough.

Christiansen, successor to Garry Monk who quit the club last month and has since been installed as Middlesbrough's new manager, guided Apoel to the last 16 of the Europa League and their domestic league title in his only season in charge, but his 12-month contract was not renewed.

"I believe in my possibilities and that is why I am here".

"Last year we finished seventh".

Orta was speaking at Thomas Christiansen's unveiling as new head coach, and said the ex-Swansea manager's staff, such as Clotet and James Beattie would be following him out of the club. But I am very excited and believe we can do good things.

Christiansen led Apoel to the Cypriot First Division title last season and hopes his fresh ideas can inspire Leeds to go one better this coming season.

Leeds United's director of football Victor Orta says that Chris Wood remaining at Elland Road is the "best solution".

"Being in England is something important", Christiansen added. "I have my ideas of how I want to play, but I have to adapt to different circumstances and the league and the players we have in this squad and of course, the opponent". I know how they play and how they advance.

The report suggests that Leeds could bring the former Rotherham United man back to English football this summer as the club's search for recruits starts to result in targets.
