Boeing said demand for single-aisle planes as well as widebodies remain buoyant despite concerns about turbulence in West Asia and low fuel prices lessening incentive to invest in more efficient aircraft.

The 737 Max 10, which will be Boeing's first new model since the unveiling of the 777X series at the Dubai Air Show in 2013, will be 1.68 metres longer than the Max 9, now the biggest member of the re-engined 737 family, which was launched alongside the Max 7 and 8 in 2011.

By comparison, the Boeiong 737-800 jets of Qantas and Virgin Australia carry around 174-176 passengers across both business and economy class. The mid-sized Max 8 will remain the "core" offering and account for the bulk of demand.

Boeing's rivalry with Airbus is heating up as the American aerospace giant officially unveiled its Boeing 737 Max 10 at the Paris Air Show today. This year, each company is expected to announce around 200 orders, though some may be airlines or leasing companies firming up earlier tentative orders.

The 737 competes with the Airbus A320neo family of jets that the European manufacturer introduced past year, which has had about 4,600 orders. But its largest jet, the 737 Max 9, which is making its debut here this week, has been a paltry seller versus the A321neo. "We are confident that our customers will be satisfied with the efficiency, economics, flexibility and passenger comfort that the 737 MAX promises to deliver".

Boeing has maintained the pressure on Airbus, its main rival, with the launch of the biggest version yet of the 737 short-haul jet.

"The 737 Max 10 extends the competitive advantage of the 737 Max family and we're honoured that so many customers across the world have embraced the outstanding value it will bring to their fleets", said Boeing commercial airplanes president and chief executive Kevin McAllister.

The first member of the Max family, the Max 8, entered service last month, flying with a Malaysian low-priced airline, Malindo Air.

The updated airliner redesigned wings and improved interior space.

"Do I think the Max 10 as we've laid it out is the right plane?"

"Simply put, the 737 MAX 10X would be the most profitable single-aisle airplane the industry has ever seen", he wrote in a blog entry. They made up more than 40% of Airbus's single-aisle jet deliveries in 2016, up from just 13% in 2010.
