"At 6:43pm (16:43 BST), a Syrian regime SU-22 dropped bombs near SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) fighters south of Tabqa", Operation Inherent Resolve said in a statement.

The Syrian army said earlier that the US -led coalition shot down one of its planes during a combat mission against Islamic State militants.

A US-led coalition fighter jet has shot down a Syrian military plane in Raqqa province, the USA has confirmed, the BBC reports.

Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said Sunday it launched missiles into eastern Syria targeting Islamic State militants in response to an attack on Iran's parliament and a shrine in Tehran, warning that it would similarly retaliate on anyone else carrying out attacks in Iran.

"This blatant attack confirms the coordination between the United States and Daesh", the Syrian statement said, employing the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

The US military says a US warplane has shot down a Syrian jet after it dropped bombs near US-backed fighters.

The latest conflict comes as US President Donald Trump hammered Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's murderous regime hard with a salvo of missiles back in April.

USA forces tangled earlier this month with Syria-allied aircraft in the region.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks Syria's war, said government forced captured from IS on Monday the town of Rasafa, expanding their presence in Raqqa province.

Coalition aircraft conducted a show of force and stopped the initial pro-regime advance toward the town, the Pentagon said.

On Monday, the Pentagon confirmed that the US -led coalition had downed a Syrian jet - the first time that has happened in Syria's six-year civil war.

The coalition has for months backed SDF forces in their bid to capture Raqa, an operation in which the regime has not been involved.

The U.S. -led coalition, which has in recent weeks escalated its aerial bombing campaign in northern Syria and Raqqa province.

The Defence Ministry said it was suspending its interaction with America on preventing air incidents over Syria from June 19.

"The shooting down of a Syrian Air Force jet in Syria's airspace is a cynical violation of Syria's sovereignty". The strikes had killed "a large number" of militants and destroyed equipment and weapons, the statement said.
